Thrilling Thursdays to host 'Mad Science Fair' event

The City of Mount Pleasant will team up with MidMichigan Health and Central Michigan University's Department Of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for the sixth week of the Thrilling Thursdays series.

The event, titled 'Mad Science Fair,' will be held at 6 p.m. on July 20 in Town Center Park, on the corner of Main and Broadway streets.

Participating children will complete science projects at home following guidelines available on Downtown Mount Pleasant's Facebook page. The event will not be judged, as the goal is for children to celebrate science in a noncompetitive way. The event is also meant to encourage children to have fun with science without having to follow a school curriculum

'Mad Science Fair' is part of the 10-week Thrilling Thursdays series, which encourages residents to be active and explore the Mount Pleasant community over the summer.

The full schedule for the Thrilling Thursdays series is as follows:

  • July 27: Superhero and Princess Extravaganza

Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite princess or superheroes and participate in craft projects, like decorating crowns and masks. There will also be an obstacle course for children to go through.

  • August 3: Stepping Stones

Participants will craft stepping stones for their garden or yard, using items like baubles, tiles and other small everyday items.

  • August 10: Urban Printmaking

Attendees will decorate blank t-shirts that they bring from home using items found around Downtown Mount Pleasant, like manhole covers and tree grates.

  • August 17: Supersoaker Festivus

Held in Island Park, participants will compete in a free-for-all water gun match. Four 'Super Aqua Blaster Soaker 1500' water guns will also be given away by raffle. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water guns, though small ones will be available at the event.
