A 34-year-old Leroy man has been lodged in the Isabella County Jail after leading police on a chase Sept. 15 following a welfare check.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a welfare check request around 12:40 p.m. Friday, said Officer Jeff Browne of the MPPD. The man was undressing himself and banging on his car in the parking lot of Meijer.

Browne said when police arrived at the scene, a man matching the description jumped into his car and headed northbound on Mission Street before heading on Old U.S. 27 to Jordan Road.

The man crashed his vehicle on the railroad tracks, Browne said. He left the car and a foot pursuit proceeded into a cornfield.

Officers set up a perimeter of the area and found the man, Browne said.

The man was lodged on charges of fleeing and eluding; resisting and obstructing; driving with a suspended license; reckless driving and several outstanding warrants.

Mount Pleasant police was assisted by the City of Clare Police Department, the Department of Natural Resources, Isabella County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police K-9 Unit, Bay Area Narcotics Unit, Mount Pleasant Fire Department and Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police Department.
