Western Michigan football takes MAC West Division lead

The Northern Illinois Huskies were a touchdown away from completing a second half comeback against No. 19 San Diego State on Saturday.

The Aztecs defense was too much in the fourth quarter, propelling SDSU to a 34-28 victory.

Three other Mid-American Conference teams played Power Five schools, however, none gained a victory.

Notre Dame and Boston College rolled over Miami (Ohio) and Central Michigan, respectively, while Kentucky won in a close game against Eastern Michigan.

Buffalo beat Kent State, Akron topped Bowling Green and Western Michigan demolished Ball State in conference matchups.

MAC West Division

No. 19 SDSU 34, NIU 28

NIU (2-2) quarterback Daniel Santacaterina did throw three touchdowns against the Aztecs, but his three interceptions were costly, including one returned 83 yards for a pick six.

The interception returned for a touchdown put SDSU up 28-14, but the Huskies did fight back with two unanswered touchdowns late in the game to make it 31-28 Aztecs.

SDSU's defense allowed zero points in the fourth quarter to secure a win. Aztec quarterback Christian Chapman led their offense, completing 10-of-19 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas 24, Eastern Michigan 20

Wildcat running back Benny Snell Jr. had a game-winning 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, dropping the Eagles to 2-2 on the season.

EMU's Sergio Bailey II had eight receptions for 80 yards and a score.

WMU 55, BSU 3

Bronco quarterback Jon Wassink completed 14-of-20 passes for 240 yards and three scores to conduct a blow out win over the Falcons.

Wideout Kieshawn Watson recorded five receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. The win puts the Broncos (3-2 overall, 1-0 MAC) atop the MAC West standings as the only team with a conference victory.

Where CMU stands

Boston College shut CMU out in the second half and won 28-8.This is the Chippewas third straight loss after starting the season undefeated.

Quarterback Shane Morris completed 21-of-42 passes and threw three interceptions. The team committed six penalties for 53 yards. 

BC punt returner Michael Walker had four punt returns for 128 yards and set up three touchdowns. 

The Chippewas (2-3, 0-1) fell to a losing record for the first time this season and will look to even up their MAC record on the road against Ohio this Saturday.
