Local children can purchase holiday gifts for family members with help from local law enforcement during the “Shop with a Cop” event Dec. 12.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Walmart Supercenter, 4730 Encore Drive.

"Shop with a Cop" is co-hosted by the store and the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Its goal is to exhibit and promote positive interaction between community youth and law enforcement, according to a city press release.

In 2016, officers made an appearance from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police Department, Central Michigan University Police Department, Shepherd Police Department, Isabella County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Mount Pleasant police.

"It's been hugely successful," said MPPD Officer Jeff Browne. "A lot of people volunteer their time to make it such a success."

Groups of volunteers will be responsible for gift wrapping.

In the past, Walmart providing $4,000 to the program and presented participating families with a basket of food to create a “Traditional holiday meal,” featuring a holiday ham.
