Speak Up, Speak Out event to discuss fake news Jan. 24
Students will have a chance to join the conversation about fake news during an upcoming forum, from 7-9 p.m. on Jan. 24, in the Bovee University Center Auditorium.
The forum, titled "Fake News: Why you should care" will be part of the university-sponsored “Speak Up, Speak Out” series, which gives students and faculty a chance to sit down and discuss certain issues, usually involving politics.
The topic of the event will be "fake news," and how to tackle the spread of false information.
Journalism faculty member Edgar Simpson, who will be moderating the forum, believes is it very important for students to attend and have a conversation about the topic.
"The goal of the panel is to help students understand that this phenomenon of fake news is very important as part of our cultural and political dialogue right now," Simpson said.
Simpson added that since times have change from 40 years ago, where almost everyone got their news from one source, it’s important to have this discussion so students have a better idea how to spot false information online, and how to solve the problem of fake news online.
There will a panel of six people, including two faculty members and four working journalists, all of whom are Central Michigan University alumni. The panel includes:
- Chad Livengood, senior reporter for Crain's Business Detroit
- Bryce Huffman, reporter for Michigan Radio in Grand Rapids
- Arielle Hines, reporter for the Petosky News-Review
- Jeremy McBain, executive editor for the Petosky News-Review
- Kyla Stepp, CMU faculty member of political science and public administration
- Rick Sykes, associate chair of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts
