Junior right-hander Brettell earns MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors

For his on-field accomplishments on Opening Day 2018, Central Michigan baseball right-handed pitcher Michael Brettell earned Mid-American Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week honors. 

Brettell, in CMU’s 5-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin at Edinburg Stadium in the Al Ogletree Classic, pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball, earning a career-high 10 strikeouts. The ace of the Chippewas allowed one run on six hits. 

The 6-foot-3 right-hander pitches 90-94 miles per hour on his power sinker, along with throwing a changeup, slider and splitter. He is expected lead the starting pitchers in Mount Pleasant throughout this season. 

Along with Brettell, the other pitcher to win the award was Miami (Ohio) junior right-hander Nick Ernst. In the opening battle of a four-game series at Arizona State, Ernst registered six strikeouts in six innings of one-run ball. He allowed just four hits to propel Miami to a 4-2 win. 

In the 2017 CMU season, Brettell finished 6-5 with a 4.26 ERA in 23 appearances, which included eight starts. He gave struck out 43 batters over 69 2/3 innings pitched.
