Former CMU First Lady Louise Plachta dies

Louise Plachta, the widow of former Central Michigan University President Leonard Plachta, died Feb. 2 at the age of 92.

Louise was under hospice care after a short illness, according to The Morning Sun.

Louise was active in the Mount Pleasant community during Leonard's tenure as president from 1992-2000. Louise continued to be active after his death in 2008, contributing to The Morning Sun as a weekly columnist.

According to University Communications, Louise was appointed CMU's undergraduate nontraditional student liaison after she and her husband retired from their positions in 2000. She also taught classes at Mount Pleasant Area Volunteers for Literacy.

In 2012, Louise created a community impact fund under the Plachta name. The Dr. Leonard E. and Louise A. Plachta Fund finances projects in the Mount Pleasant community that lack funding from other local foundations.

Louise is survived by two daughters, Linda and Laura.
