Brandon Childress made two receptions for 23 yards in a 35-20 loss to Kentucky in Week 1.

The Central Michigan junior wide receiver said he didn't struggle, but his execution on offense needs to improve.

Childress has 11 more regular season games to make a difference, starting with Kansas at 3 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

"I need to get to the point where I'm dominating every play," Childress said. "I want to put up games like Julio Jones does in the (NFL). If I want to be the best, I need to play like the best."

The focus in CMU's practice this week for receivers has been execution, playing fast and catching the football.

Redshirt sophomore Tony Poljan, in his first career start for the Chippewas, was 17-of-27 through the air for 137 yards. He ran 16 times for 47 yards.

Childress was most impressed with his quarterback's ability to stay positive on the sidelines despite the score.

"Tony played well and competed," Childress added. "He made a lot of the right reads, and we are looking to get better."

Looking ahead to Kansas, Childress does even focus on the fact that the Jayhawks are a Power 5 team in the Big 12 Conference.

The 6-foot-2, 184-pound wide out hopes for a packed Kelly/Shorts Stadium, giving CMU a chance to show fans what the team is about in the 2018 season.

Childress said every offense in college football experiences growing pains in Week 1, as the Chippewas did against the Wildcats at Kroger Field.

“I feel like we have so much more to grow," he said. "It wouldn’t be fun if we gave our best Week 1 and never again. We are trying to get better every week.”
