In the first home game of the season, Central Michigan field hockey failed to record a shot and fell apart in the second half to record a 0-7 loss to Pacific.

The Chippewas (1-4) only let in two goals to the Tigers (3-2) in the first half at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. In the second half, Pacific scored five.

The Chippewas struggled much of the first half to move the ball past mid-field. The first half belonged to the Tigers as their defense was all but impenetrable and their offense applied pressure for the majority of the opening frame. The Chippewas did move the ball into the Tigers’ zone, but could not muster a shot in the first half.

Defense was the key for the Chippewas in the first half as they faced seven Tiger corners and only gave up a goal on a sweeping shot from senior forward Kriekie van Wyk just five minutes into the game.

The Tigers’ second goal came courtesy of senior forward Rylee Comeau as a rising shot connected with the cross bar and dropped over the goal line to give the Tigers a two goal lead into the break.

As the second half pushed on, the Chippewa defense showed some fatigue as the Tigers scored three goals in the span of eight minutes.

Chippewa senior goalkeeper Lily Amadio gave up seven goals on 13 shots, but made some big saves to keep the score manageable.

“They know they are better than what they showed out here,” Chippewa head coach Catherine Ostoich said. “That’s the ultimate thing, that we have instilled belief and confidence in them that they know they are better. That’s why it hurts more.”

Ostoich delivered a message to the fans following the contest thanking fans for attending Thursday’s match. Next, the Chippewas take the field at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7 at the CMU Field Hockey Complex against Saint Francis.
