First coronavirus death confirmed in Isabella County

The first death in Isabella County from the coronavirus was confirmed by the Central Michigan District Health Department March 29.

According to a press release, the death occurred at McLaren Central Michigan hospital in Mount Pleasant. The patient was a man in his 80s. He was admitted to the hospital on March 21 and had underlying health conditions, said Rachel Blizzard, McLaren Central Michigan's Director of Marketing & Fund Development.

As of March 29, there were 4,658 coronavirus cases in Michigan, with a death toll of 111, according to the state's website. Four cases have been confirmed in Isabella County, and a student on campus at Central Michigan University was confirmed to have the virus by University Communications on March 26.

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathies to the family who has lost their loved one,” said Steve Hall, Health Officer at CMDHD. “This is a tragic reminder of how serious (of) a threat COVID-19 is to our community.”
