Zeta Tau Alpha raises $2,700 during Think Pink Week

(11/16/17 6:33pm)

Zeta Tau Alpha collected $2,700 in donations from its annual Think Pink Week from Oct. 23-27. The money will be distributed among the three Think Pink partners: the American Cancer Society, the National Football League’s program, A Crucial Catch, and Bright Pink, an organization that focuses on breast and ovarian cancer prevention. As part of the chapter's philanthropy — breast cancer education and awareness — Zeta Tau Alpha hosts a week dedicated to raising awareness and educating women on campus in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Seeing the impact on a national level, community level and even within our chapter is very powerful,” said philanthropy chair Sam Berryhill. “We are proud to be able to support such a worthy cause, but most of all we want to keep fighting all year round until we can eliminate these horrible diseases." One of the events during the week was the Women’s Wednesday Bright Pink Workshop. The workshop discussed signs and symptoms of ovarian and breast cancer and ways women could reduce these risks. This event focused on the informational aspect of the week rather than raising donations.  "Personally, I found out through the Bright Pink workshops that I am at a moderate risk for breast cancer and high risk for ovarian cancer,” Berryhill said. "Knowing this information and the steps I can take to reduce my risk has completely changed my life.” In order to increase participation and donations throughout the week, the sorority created a point system for fraternities to compete in — the ultimate goal being to get to the final event, the Kick Out Breast Cancer Kickball Tournament, to win t-shirts and bragging rights.  “I participated in the events because we like to support the philanthropy events as much as we can,” said Scout Case of Sigma Pi. “The girls were very good at reaching out and promoting the events by constantly letting us know about them and how much fun they were which motivated us even more to all show up." Zeta Tau Alpha will host its next philanthropy event, the Crown Classic 5K walk/run, this spring.
