'Speak Up, Speak Out' panel to discuss academic freedom, equal education

The Speak Up Speak Out series will discuss safe spaces and free expression at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium.“Safe Spaces/Free Expression?: How do academic freedom and equal education coexist?” will consist of a panel including faculty, staff and students including: Joshua Smith, philosophy and religion faculty member; Christi Brookes, dean of the department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures; and Bellal Ammar and Autumn Gairaud, who are students.

Alumna adapts to job market after graduation, models in NYC

When Mack Dihle graduated in 2004 from Central Michigan University, her plan was to get a job as a band director; the now 33-year-old Chicago resident never expected to find employment as an androgynous male model in New York Fashion Week who plays saxophone at jazz clubs when she is off duty as a police officer.Dihle said she never would have gotten to where she is today if she wouldn't have attended her alma mater with a full-ride trumpet scholarship, and made the move to Chicago.

Animation course to be offered in fall

In fall of 2016, an animation course will be available for students.At recruiting events, a variety of students have shown interest in taking animation and game design courses, said Larry Burditt, chairman of the department of art and design. The art and design department faculty and computer science professor Anthony Morelli have been actively trying to implement these classes. “The [computer science] classes have a game design program of sorts, so we’re focusing on the animation modeling side of things,” Burditt said.

Three CCFA associate dean candidates to be interviewed

Journalism faculty member accepts department chair position at Ball State

Sparks is an associate professor of advertising and applied to be the chairperson of Central Michigan University's journalism department last year, but the job was given to Jiafei Yin. He was also the director of CMU’s Center for Innovation, Collaboration and Engagement.Since arriving at CMU in Fall 2012, Sparks has taught "JRN 360: Principles of Advertising," "JRN 466: Advertising Campaigns," "JRN 365: Advertising Media" and "JRN 397A: Sex, Violence, & the Media."

3D printing courses to be available again next fall

After creating designs for jewelry, shoes and body adornments last semester, Kimberly Johnson was able to print out her creations into three dimensional objects.The Saginaw senior is one of several students who took a course using 3D printing technology at Central Michigan University, after the MakerBot Innovation Center opened in fall 2015.
