Faculty, staff motivated to hunt for better health

CMU employees are being offered a lunch hour of exercise and fun during a scavenger hunt from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday sponsored by University Health Services.
"It's a hunt for faculty and staff; an incentive to get people out and walking on their lunch hours," said Mark Vick, health fitness intern.
Groups of four people will begin at the south end of University Park and walk in search of the next clue, Vick said. Employees at Health Services have been racking their brains, trying to come up with creative clues.
An example of a clue leading a hunter to the pond would be, "If you're going fishing, cast your way to this landmark," Vick said.
Each team will be timed separately and prizes such as T-shirts, water bottles, lunch coolers and gift certificates will be provided, Vick said.
The walk will last about 45 minutes and will include a free lunch of turkey sandwiches, carrot sticks, chips, juice and water.
As of Friday, 13 teams of four had signed up for the walk, Vick said.
Participants are being asked to park at Health Services, and will be directed to the starting point.
The hunt will take place regardless of weather condition, with the rain location being the Indoor Athletics Complex track.
This is the first year that Health Services has initiated walking for faculty and staff in the form of a scavenger hunt. In the past, activities such as a poker walk were sponsored.
Vick said the scavenger hunt will hopefully motivate staff to use the walking area at University Park during their lunch hours to encourage better health.
"We promote healthy activities for faculty and staff so that they can provide better services to students," Vick said.
Vick cited studies which have shown that the healthier employees of a company are, the less prone they are to accidents and absences.
Health Services will continue to offer opportunities for faculty and staff to better their health throughout the year, Vick said.
