Jobs still available on campus

This fall there are plenty of places, on and off campus, to earn some cash.
"There are still a number of jobs available, so I think that we're keeping up with the demand pretty well," said Manager of Student Employment Jon Goodwin.
Depending on department budgets, students may be hired as either work-study employees or general student assistance employees, Goodwin said.
Work-study employment is available to students who have been granted a financial aid package that includes a Federal or Michigan Work-Study award. Students must have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to receive work-study.
Work-study employees may switch their position to general student assistant employees after they have earned their awarded amount.
All students, including international students and those who do not qualify for financial aid, may work for the university as GSA employees. These jobs are paid by individual departments and students do not have a maximum-earning ceiling.
Goodwin said some perks of on-campus employment are no Social Security tax withholdings, convenient locations, many positions that don't require expertise and flexible work schedules.
"Most employers are willing to work around students' schedules," Goodwin said.
While employers understand students' primary objective is to concentrate on their studies, Goodwin said, campus employers still expect student workers to treat campus jobs as responsibly as any other.
"Most departments seem to be very satisfied with their student employees," he said. "There are not many discipline problems."
Goodwin said the average pay rate for campus jobs is $5.40, though it varies in different departments.
Off-campus jobs are also available for students who do not qualify for work-study.
Jon's Drive In, 1030 S. Mission St., is now taking applications, said Jon Spiris, owner.
Spiris said he needs two part-time cooks and is looking for reliable, flexible individuals who are willing to work any shift.
"It's hard to find lunch-hour people," he said.
Meijer Inc., 1015 Pickard Road, is also accepting applications as well as Mountain Town Station, 506 W. Broadway Road.
Angie Reynolds, administrative manager of Mountain Town, said applications are welcome anytime even if the restaurant is not hiring at the time.
Campus jobs are posted on job boards in the Bovee University Center and on the CMU Web site, www.hrs.cmich.edu, or call CMU's job hotline at 774-7467.
