Students enjoy food taster

CMU students had a chance to taste Hispanic foods whose recipes originated from around the world Tuesday night.

The Hispanic Heritage Month Annual Food Taster in the Bovee University Center Rotunda Room, offered Mexican, Cuban, Venezuelan, Columbian, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Chilean and Argentinian foods. Tres Leches, a dessert from Cuba, was popular.

“The strawberry short cake is awesome,” Lake Orion sophomore Jeremy Lawless said of the dessert.

Besides the serving of various Hispanic foods, the event also featured dancers from Saginaw’s Xochiquetzal children’s dancing group.

Xochiquetzal’s Co-Director Richard Menchaca said the group is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This was its seventh time performing at CMU.

The group performed Mexican folk dances from the Mexican states Jalisco, Sinaloa and Nayarit.

Some came to experience the culture while others came to eat. The delicacies ranged from soft tacos with carne asada from Mexico to rice and black beans from Venezuela.

Center Line sophomore Lauren Sherwood said she attended the event to compare it with “A Taste of Flava,” another Hispanic food-tasting event.

“I like being in the atmosphere and what types of people come to this,” she said.

Farmington Hills freshman Cat Allison said she heard about the event in her Spanish 201 class. She said she came because she wants to study abroad in Mexico and wanted to get a better feel for the culture.

“It’s interested me,” Allison said of the food tasting.

Assistant Director of Minority Student Services Ann Kwak said she thought the turn out was great. She added the majority of the attendees were students.

She also said that it’s nice to see people from the community participate. Kwak said events such as this one bring about awareness and provide exposure for the community.

“It’s a unique way of exposing people to different cultures,” she said.
