Honors recital presents outlet for gifted students

After a semester of course work and practice, several honor students performed their craft at the School of Music Honors Recital Monday.

Students, staff and community members watched as the best student talent performed at the Staples Family Concert Hall.

The seven student performers were each picked by a professor.

“Each studio chooses a person to represent them at the recital,” said Nina Nash-Robertson, director of choral activities and music professor. “So everyone performing was selected by their teachers. It’s pretty amazing, the level of talent in these concerts.”

Muskegon senior James Fusik, a saxophonist, performed the fourth sonata of William Albright’s “Recitative and Dance.”

“Top to bottom, I think it was well-varied,” Fusik said.

He was accompanied by Rubia Souza Santos, a music professor and pianist, which made for an exciting performance. The climax occured when Santos stood up and tapped the inside of the piano during the song.

“The piece is really exciting, I thought the crowd really liked it,” Fusik said.
