Thursday night was supposed to be the debut of the Orchesis Dance Theater’s Winter Concert. Then Old Man Winter intervened.

A winter storm forced the cancellation of the show, along with all other university events and classes.

Orchesis member Meghan Immekus said she understood the reasoning behind the cancellation of the concert.

“I think it’s OK because I want everybody to be safe trying to get there,” the Dryden senior said. “I think we’ll have a better turnout the rest of the weekend because there won't be a show tonight.”

Yvette Crandall, Orchesis artistic director and associate speech communication and dramatic arts professor, said the concert will likely take place the rest of the weekend, possibly even if school is canceled.

“Unless the weather was even worse, we’ll have a show tomorrow,” she said.

The remaining concerts are scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in Moore Hall’s Bush Theatre.

Immekus said Thursday night’s performance would have been a nervous experience, but now she will spend the night doing homework.

“I think everybody else is just relaxing,” she said.

Orchesis members were required to practice Thursday so their routine would stay fresh, Immekus said.

“Once you have a break between practices it’s kind of hard to keep the momentum,” she said.

Rock and choir will be among the musical genres featured in the concert, she said, and Orchesis members will be performing tap, jazz, modern and lyrical dance.

Central Box Office employee Jamie Brandt said those who bought tickets to Thursday’s show can have their tickets refunded or exchanged for another night’s performance.

Brandt, a Mount Pleasant junior, said ticket exchanges should be made before the event.

“If they want to see it on Sunday, they should be in before Sunday to return their tickets,” she said.

Winter concert tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $7 for the general public. They can be purchased by calling 774-3000 or (888) CMU-0111. Tickets also can be purchased at the Central Box Office on the lower level of the Bovee University Center.
