Singin’ the night away
For some college students, nights at the bar are spent drinking beer and listening to the music.
Others spend their night providing the music.
Karaoke has become a popular form of entertainment at local clubs and bars.
Several nightspots have designated a “Karaoke night” for students who want to sing.
Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar, 1904 S. Mission St., lets singers belt out tunes at 9 p.m. on Wednesday nights.
“It’s usually a really good time; everyone is having fun even though they don’t sing well,” said Steve Cassiday, Buffalo Wild Wings manager.
He said Karaoke nights usually attract about 50 people, many of them regulars.
Mount Pleasant senior Travis DuBord is one of those regulars.
“We come here to sing every week. We love it,” he said.
Other local bars that host Karaoke nights include O’Kellys Sports Bar & Grill, 2000 S. Mission St., on Tuesday nights and Chippewa Lanes, 1200 S. Mission St., on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The Cabin, 930 W. Broomfield, has an open mic night, very similar to Karaoke.
Even though it may be a popular pastime, many bars don’t advertise that they have a Karaoke night.
“I’ve never even seen signs for Karaoke nights around here,” said Ryan Krueger, Saginaw senior.
The Cabin has live entertainment several nights a week and usually draws a fairly large crowd.
“We don’t have a Karaoke night anymore but we’re thinking about bringing it back,” said Jay Garner, assistant manager of The Cabin.
