Author says English-speaking people are 'vanguard' of civilization's wars

The English-speaking world faces great opposition from some nations, Andrew Roberts said.

The author and speaker said many decisions made by those Tuesday, such as President George W. Bush during the Iraq War, for example, were misguided and not agreed with by the Iraqi people.

"It has been the English-speaking people who have been at the vanguard of the war between civilization and barbarism," Roberts said.

Roberts visited Central Michigan University on Tuesday in Charles V. Park Library to discuss challenges concerning the English-speaking people, including topics from his book, "A History of the English-speaking Peoples since 1900."

Roberts touched upon a variety of subjects relating to the recent history of the English-speaking people, beginning where Winston Churchill's famed anthology left off while dealing with the same subject.

"This is in no sense an Anglo-Saxon struggle - it's not about race, it's about values." Roberts said, referring to the continuing crusade of the English-speaking world as an united front against terrorism and other threats.

The author talked about the importance of freedom of the press and its prevalence in the English-speaking world.

Roberts relayed the chain of political, economic, technological and eventually military success that is at the root of the English world's dominance.

"The English-speaking people of the world make up 7 percent of the world's population, but make up more than 30 percent of the world's (economy)," Roberts said.

Topinabee junior and Campus Conservative member Dennis Lennox II introduced Roberts, and said it was a good opportunity to have him on campus.

"Today, the English-speaking people are under attack," Lennox said.

The speech drew a positive response from other Campus Conservatives members.

"I was very satisfied - it was thorough, engaging and very up to date. It was really relevant to the time." said Redford senior and Campus Conservatives member Andrew Petrevics.

After the speech, Roberts commented on his visits to colleges such as CMU.

"I enjoy it ... I think it's very stimulating," Roberts said.

His book, "A History of the English-Speaking Peoples since 1900," is a best-seller and is available now at bookstores.
