Take care of finances

Between exams, homework and jobs, taxes and financial aid may be tossed to the wayside.

Students now should take special care to guarantee all their financial necessities are in order for the next year.

Especially with credit as tight as it is, students should make sure to budget ahead and get as much in federal loans as they need. The Michigan FAFSA deadline is March 1, and students should ensure their materials are submitted ahead of time.

A missed FAFSA form could result in a missed semester. There are only a few weeks left to submit the form.

For those with jobs, the income tax deadline is April 17, and now is the time to get W2 and other forms in order. Students should review carefully their finances; they do not want to miss a possible rebate, nor do they want to be charged with tax evasion.

Students also should not content themselves by letting their parents handle all their finances.

They should not blindly charge into filling out their tax forms, but they also should not shrug them off. Go to irs.gov for more info.

Students should check each item with their parents and take an active role in filling out the form.

They should take time now to learn how to keep track of their own taxes. Many parents would be eager to help their kids understand their taxes.

Practicing fiscal responsibility now will not only prevent a headache next year, but it will equip students with the financial know-how that will be necessary for the rest of their lives.

This should not be tossed aside because of a busy schedule.
