New music, English courses approved at A-senate meeting

Instrumental music students will now have the opportunity to improve their ability to lead rehearsals with the addition of MUS 431: Instrumental Classroom and Rehearsal Methods.

Previously, there was no course in classroom methods for the instrumental music education majors.

The curricular change was among proposals by the Central Michigan University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee that the Academic Senate approved Tuesday.

"Previous courses taught the techniques of music, this course will give students the opportunity to learn rehearsing skills," said music professor Andrew Spencer.

The senate also approved a new academic program concentration, a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature: Children's/Young Adult Literature concentration.

The senate approved the addition of COM 100: Communication and Society as well.

The M.A. English Language and Literature concentration focuses on the capstone project of Children's Literature. All students pursuing their M.A. in English Language and Literature take 15 hours of required courses and a 15 hour capstone project.

The new concentration requires 24 credit hours among six categories, such as literary criticism and professional methodologies.

Communication and dramatic arts professor Wendy Papa presented the COM 100 change. The addition of this one credit hour course changes the number of credit hours a student must complete at 25 credit hours from 24 for a communication minor.

The senate approved the designator AAD to replace the EHS designator. AAD stands for Academic Advancement and will be effective May 8.

Ray Francis, Academic Senate chairman and teacher education and professional development associate professor, said now that the senate has approved the curricular changes they will be presented to the Registrar's office.

"The Registrar's office will be taking care of all the programs and the advising from there," he said.
