Costume crusade: Larzelere Hall wins city-wide scavenger hunt

See Batman and Robin running through the parking lot on Friday?

How about the cast of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" or a large group of pregnant men and women taking notes downtown?

Those unaware of what was going on may have thought that it was Halloween in April, but it was all part of Mission Impossible, a large-scale scavenger hunt between residence halls on Friday night. The event encompassed all of Mount Pleasant, as well as CMU's campus.

"It was a blast," said Maureen McManus, a Traverse City senior. "It rivals Dream and all the other hall things because you're able to have the camaraderie of people in your own hall, and just be able to have a great time with all the other halls on campus."

McManus was a part of the Campbell Hall team, whose theme was super heroes.

Participants from each hall organized at Merrill Residential Restaurant for registration and dance warm-ups. As the clock struck 9 p.m., each team was in a rush to get outside and start answering as many of the 500 questions that were handed to them as they could.

Teams had to travel to numerous locations on campus as well as local businesses in order to determine the answers. The team with the most correct answers won. Bonus points were given to the best dressed team.

The event ran until midnight, by which all teams were required to be back to Merrill Residential Restaurant to determine the winner.

Larzelere Hall won the competition, with the combined team of Robinson and Calkins finishing as the runner-up.

Katie Cothery, the Mission Impossible registration and decorations chair, was impressed with the number of enthusiastic participants this year.

"We had over 200 participants this year," the White Lake senior said.

McManus' Campbell Hall team didn't win, but he was still impressed with the team's effort.

"I think we did well for how many people we had," she said. "We weren't one of the strongest teams in terms of numbers, but I think we put forth a great effort and did very well."

Clinton Township junior Santino Palazzolo was the team leader for Campbell Hall.

"One of the main aspects I really love about Central is these important gatherings of students who have an ambition to lead and be very involved outside of academics," he said. "We're all dedicated and we all love the arts."
