Relaxation Day aims to relieve anxiety for students before finals

Nothing could be better than a massage to relieve the tension that comes with exam week.

That's exactly what Program Board plans to offer this week free of charge.

Students can kick back with free chair, table and hand massages during Relaxation Day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday on the Bovee University Center lawn. If it rains, the event will be moved to the UC Maroon and Gold Room.

This event was created for the purpose of taking a break from studying and just relaxing your brain and body, said Crysta Heckman, Program Board comedy chairwoman.

"I think it is important for students to be able to relax, especially with all of the stress that happens before finals. This event primarily serves a purpose to just have fun and enjoy themselves while having their stress relieved," she said.

Traverse City senior Allison Vlach said she plans to attend.

"I would definitely go to this Relaxation Day because it's a good way to de-stress myself. And I would also like to enjoy getting the massages there," she said.

Ortonville sophomore Marie McDonald is the daytime special events chairwoman for Relaxation Day and said people start to freak out during exams and this event just relaxes them.

"Getting a massage may not be for everyone, but you can give it a try," McDonald said.

For Heckman, watching cartoons and getting massages are two things that help her rid of extra stress.

"Watching shows that make me laugh and smile and take a break from studying will definitely help as well," the Pinconning junior said.

Walker freshman Chelsea McCarthy often has chronic back pain and said she plans on attending the event to relieve her back pain and take a break from studying for finals.

"It would be nice to get a massage with all the stress that I have built up right now," McCarthy said. "I really hope to have some fun by attending Relaxation Day and I think I will be able to relax somewhat after this."
