Local man charged with animal cruelty

A local man was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to animals.

John Huguelet, 47 of Mount Pleasant, was arraigned and charged Tuesday in Isabella County Trial Court with cruelty to 10 or more animals, which is a four-year felony. His bond was set at $6,000.

At 6:14 p.m. Sunday, the Isabella County Sheriff's Department received a call regarding several horses that looked "deathly ill and neglected" in the 800 block of Leaton Road in Denver Township, according to a press release from the sheriff's department.

The sheriff's department conducted an investigation and the release stated that "it was readily apparent to the deputies that there were 11 horses that were very sickly and malnourished."

A local veterinarian came to the scene and had to euthanize two of the horses immediately and a warrant was issued for the owner's arrest.

Four other horses had to be euthanized and the five remaining horses were transported to a farm in Isabella County.

"Two out of the five (horses) may not even make it through the rest of the day," said Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski. "The farmer is going to try and work with the vet to save the horses and nurse them to health."

Huguelet is scheduled for a preliminary examination at 8:15 a.m. Thursday.
