Trout Hall RA shaved his head for charity

Chances are, if you are a student at Central Michigan University, you are wearing shoes. Or at least own more than one pair.

During the month of September, Adam Lucassian, Kevin Birkholz and Travis Gibler, the male Resident Assistants of Trout Hall, were a part of a fundraiser: whoever raised the most money had to shave their head at the end of the month.

“We tried to get the girls involved, but they weren’t having it,” said Lucassian, a Washington sophomore.

Lucassian was the winner — or maybe the loser depending on how he looked at it— and, Wednesday night, he had his head shaved. For the first day, he had to wear his hair as a mohawk.

The fundraiser was to benefit a registered student organization representing Toms Shoes.

“Toms Shoes is a nonprofit organization that gives a pair of shoes to a child in need every time someone buys a pair,” Lucassian said. “We wanted to do a fundraiser, and I was involved in Toms Shoes. They are a new RSO on campus. We wanted to help them out.”

Trout Hall raised $161.84 for the organization this month.

“When they first mentioned the idea, I was surprised they were all on board with it,” said Trout Resident Hall Director Ann Krzyzaniak. “I’m really proud of their commitment and all the money they raised.”

Three milk jugs were placed on Trout Hall’s front desk. Residents were to donate money in the jug that represented the RA they would like to win.

Birkholz has a near buzz cut. Surprisingly, he only raised $3.75.

Lucassian and Gibler have much more hair. Lucassian beat Gibler by $30.

Successful shave

The residents, RAs, multicultural advisers and even Krzyzaniak were all allowed to take a chunk of Lucassian’s hair out.

The smiles on the residents' faces were reminiscent of children on their birthdays as they were allowed, even encouraged, to shave their RA’s head.

“Adam is my RA, I donated money in his jug because I wanted him to get his head shaved,” said Haley Dorion, Midland freshman and one of the top donors. “Plus it all goes to Toms Shoes. It’s a good organization, they deserve the money.”

Lucassian might have been a little hesitant when his hair started falling off.

“Who’s going to call my mom?” shouted Lucassian halfway through the hair cut. “If she saw my hair right now, she’d be mad. But she won’t see it until it’s all shaved off.”

When the butchered Mohawk was finally finished, and a failed attempt to style it took place, residents began to head back to their dorms.

“I’m going to try to make a shirt before class that says, ‘I shaved my head for Toms Shoes,’ so people will know what’s going on,” Lucassian said. “I’m extremely happy. This is more than what I was expecting.”
