Singles should enjoy being alone on Valentine's Day

Instead of Valentine’s Day, I am celebrating Black Day two months early this year.

This South Korean holiday, as explained by Forbes, happens April 14 and focuses on celebrating the single life.

Since April is a few snowstorms away, I will first be celebrating Single’s Awareness Day on Monday.

Suggested activities include sending flowers to yourself, which I fully intend to do.

I am serious. I am ordering myself flowers.

Screw self-doubt, by the way. Getting down on yourself because you happen to not have a date for Valentine’s Day is stupid.

You are a beautiful, fantastic person, whether you happen to have a romantic partner.

If you are single on Valentine’s Day, you have a unique advantage.

Many people are single and looking to mingle.

Single people have many more holidays to celebrate, such as National Singles Day on Nov. 11.

The day originated in China, and I celebrated it last semester by getting completely toasted on someone else’s bar tab for free.

More importantly, Valentine’s Day is a super weird holiday.

Back in ancient Rome, February was considered the time to cleanse oneself.

People swept their houses out and sprinkled salt and wheat throughout the interior, according to the History Channel.

The ancient Romans also would sacrifice goats and dogs for fertility and purification. Then they would slap crops and females with strips of goathide.

Thankfully, February, in modern times, is not celebrated by slaps with goathide.

My advice is to take Valentine’s Day as your own personal “cleansing,” and take time to reflect on yourself and your own unique needs.

Keep in mind I am not recommending sprinkling things throughout the interior of your apartment.

The majority of us are college students and likely have roommates, and you will freak them out by pouring a bag of wheat on the carpet.

Many singles Web sites call for an end to the “commercialization” of Feb. 14, but I don’t care about that either.

In fact, I purchase a pack of Valentine’s cards every year for co-workers and friends. I strongly recommend you do the same.

Believe it or not, a simple Little Mermaid “I Like You” children’s Valentine’s card is a great way to start a conversation with your current crush.

At any rate, I have not been single for the past three Valentine’s days, and I have yet to receive flowers.

Case in point: celebrate yourself, whether you are in a relationship or not. And think about placing that personal order to the florist.
