Gymnasts defeat No. 23 Arizona State
Senior Katie Simon and junior Andrea de la Garza led the CMU gymnastics team to an upset win against No. 23 Arizona State with a pair of 39.275 all-around scores.
CMU beat the Sun Devils 195.575-194.825 Friday in Tempe, Ariz.
The team scored its highest on the vault routine, posting a 49.1. The lowest counted score was a 9.8.
It nearly matched that score with a 49.075 on the floor exercise. Sophomore Kristin Teubner, who led CMU on the floor exercise, scored a 9.85 on the event, as well as the vault and the balance beam.
Simon's best score, a 9.875, came on the balance beam. CMU outscored ASU 48.875-47.625 on the balance beam.
de la Garza did not score lower than a 9.8 on any of the four events.
CMU (10-2) competes against Ball State on March 13 at Rose Arena in Mount Pleasant.
