James Moreno re-elected to Isabella County Board of Commissioners after technical difficulties delay results

After a long wait for election results, James Moreno was re-elected to the Isabella County Board of Commissioners Wednesday to serve his second two-year term.

Moreno, a Democrat, received 61 percent of the votes in his district, defeating Republican Chris Zimmerman, who received 39 percent.

“I feel it’s a bittersweet time, given the state and national context of the Democrats getting defeated quite a bit,” Moreno said. “I am grateful for my victory.”

Moreno, a pet food salesman from Mount Pleasant, previously served two years on the county board, along with six years on the Mount Pleasant City Commission.

He said his goals include getting Isabella County to embrace the “new knowledge economy” and increase efficiency by using new technology and social networking.

“I appreciate the fact that the people in my district can discern between substance and bombast,” Moreno said, referring to his opponent. “It has given me new faith in my constituents … I’m looking forward to moving forward and trying some new ideas at the county commission,” he said.

Zimmerman, an insurance salesman, said he is disappointed by the results, but will move on.

He said he has not decided if he would be willing to run for office again.

“I’m going to finish my book, keep selling insurance and go pheasant hunting,” Zimmerman said.
