Chippewas split Day 2 in Jacksonville

Freshman right-hander Chelsea Sundberg made her first appearance in the circle for Central Michigan softball and she didn’t disappoint.

Sundberg shut down Jacksonville State University hitters, giving CMU its first win of the season 2-0, but the Chippewas fell in the Saturday’s second game 7-0.

She pitched a complete game, allowing three base runners and striking out six Jacksonville State (4-4) players.

“Chelsea did a great job,” said CMU head coach Margo Jonker. “It was great to see. She was locating her pitches well, making it hard for hitters.

“The ball was moving well for her. She had a big game.”

CMU scored both runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a costly Jacksonville State error. A throwing error plated freshman pinch runner Jamey Braxton and sophomore Summer Knoop.

Senior Kari Seddon led CMU on the day with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.

Game 2

Jacksonville University (5-3) shut out CMU for the second consecutive day, winning 7-0 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Sophomore Sarah Simon hit a two-run single for the Dolphins in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless game. CMU came right back in the bottom of the third, putting two runners on with only one out but was unable to score score them.

“We had opportunities, (but we) just left runners on,” Jonker said.

In the top of the sixth, JU capitalized off of two CMU errors and three hits to break open the game, increasing its lead to 5-0.

“We opened the door for them to score with sloppy defense and they took advantage,” Jonker said. “We needed to do a better job of locating our pitches.”

Sophomore Sarah Patterson, freshman Morgan Yuncker and Seddon all pitched in the second game. In Yuncker’s first-ever appearance for the Chippewas, she faced two batters and recorded two outs.

CMU (1-3) plays a double header against Florida A &M (4-0) beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday before heading home to Mount Pleasant.
