Chippewas post losses against Stetson, Columbia over weekend

Stetson first baseman Ryan Lashley hit a walk-off single Sunday to beat Central Michigan 9-8 in DeLand, Fla., the second loss of the weekend for CMU.

The Chippewas (4-7) rushed out to a 4-0 lead in its first three at bats. Junior designated hitter Nate Theunissen hit his third double of the season for one of his two hits on the day, and drove in three runs.

CMU had no problem at the plate, recording 11 hits and eight runs, but three errors and eight walks helped Stetson (9-1) climb back into the game. The Hatters came back in the bottom of the third inning to score three runs, but really mounted a comeback with four runs in the seventh.

Stetson third baseman Ben Carhart was the key piece to that comeback, scoring three runs and driving in another three.

Junior right-hander Harvey Martin got the loss without allowing an earned run in the 2.1 innings pitched.

Columbia loss

Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Columbia (1-1) had much less offense and better pitching. CMU only scratched out four hits and one run courtesy of a single by senior right fielder Matt Faiman.

Junior left-hander Trent Howard threw 7.2 innings, striking out 11 batters while only allowing five hits, three walks and two earned runs for the loss.

Half of CMU’s hits came off Faiman’s at bats. Columbia’s Geoff Whitaker pitched a strong seven innings without walking a batter and surrendering just a run. Stefan Olson picked up the save by finishing the game without allowing a hit.

The Chippewas are off Monday before facing Stetson again at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in DeLand, Fla.
