Seddon throws another gem in shutout win over Wagner

Senior right-hander Kari Seddon continued her strong start to the season, throwing a one-hit shutout as the Central Michigan softball team went on to beat Wagner 11-0 Sunday in Clearwater, Fla.

For the second consecutive day, Seddon took a no-hitter into the opponent’s last at-bats. With two outs left, Wagner (0-5) left fielder Ashley Olsen singled down the left field line to break up the streak.

“Kari did a really nice job and (Amanda) Klosterman did a great job behind the plate and calling the game,” said CMU coach Margo Jonker.

The Chippewas offense stayed hot with a season-high 14 hits Sunday as junior shortstop Molly Coldren hit her second home run in as many days. She now leads the team with three on the season.

“Molly has obviously stepped up her game,” Jonker said. “She is getting much more comfortable at the plate and she had a good game defensively today, and yesterday too.”

CMU didn’t commit an error Sunday, which is the kind of defense Jonker has been pressing for early in the season.

“The defense made plays today,” Jonker said. “When the defense is playing well the offense starts getting hits.”

It was a scoreless game until the top of the third when CMU’s offense broke out. Three singles followed by a three-run homer by senior third baseman Amanda Patrick capped off a four-run inning. Coldren lead off the next inning with a solo shot, making the score 5-0.

CMU really put the game out of reach in the top of the seven by scoring six insurance runs, making the score 11-0. The team took advantage of five hits and as many wild pitches to give Seddon insurance on offense.

The Chippewas will play Maine (7-12) at 2 p.m. Monday, beginning a week that sees the team play seven games in Clearwater, Fla., before returning home to end spring break.

“We have a lot of softball coming up,” Jonker said.
