Softball beats Wright State, loses to Michigan State
Senior Amanda Patrick homered for the second consecutive day as Central Michigan beat Wright State 5-2 before losing to Michigan State 3-0 Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
Patrick’s two-run bomb hit in the bottom of the sixth capped off the Chippewa comeback.
It was her third home run of the season and seventh career shot at CMU.
CMU trailed 2-0 in the top of the first after three Wright State hits and an error. Senior Brittini Merchant tied the game up with a two-run single in the fourth, driving in freshman Jamey Braxton and senior Kari Seddon.
Freshman Chelsea Sundberg pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four batters.
The Chippewas were outhit 5-3 in the first game, but two hits resulted in four runs batted in due to 12 walks from Wright State freshman pitcher Krystian DeWitt.
Game 2
In the second game, Michigan State took advantage of two solo homers from Lauren Kramer and Jayme O’Bryant. The Spartans scored their other run in the fourth.
Freshman pitcher Cassee Layne (6-6) pitched a complete game shutout for MSU, only allowing two hits – both to Seddon – and no earned runs.
Seddon picked up the loss for CMU, throwing 3.2 innings while allowing two runs on four hits.
Sophomore Macy Merchant walked twice and stole two bases but was stranded in scoring position both times. She now has 11 steals on the season, leading the Chippewas.
CMU (13-9) finishes the Hoosier Classic against Indiana, their second meeting in three days, at1:30 p.m. Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
