PHILADELPHIA - The season came to a close a little short for Central Michigan.

Junior heavyweight Jarod Trice and junior 133-pounder Scotti Sentes placed fourth, while sophomore 174-pounder Ben Bennett claimed eighth at the NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championships at Wells Fargo Center.

CMU finished tied for 13th with 39 points.

After losing in the semifinals Friday night, Trice beat Indiana's Ricardo Alcala on Day 3 in a second tiebreaker to advance into the wrestleback finals for third place. Like their match on Thursday, which also went into a second tiebreaker, Alcala jumped out early with an escape to take a 1-0 lead.

Trice tied the match in the second period with an escape, sending him into his third overtime bout of the tournament. After both men scored a point in the first tiebreaker, Trice took a 3-2 lead in the second and prevented Alcala from escaping.

He came up short, however, in the third place match, losing by a 3-2 decision to Missouri's Dominique Bradley.

“I came in thinking I should be able to win it," said Trice, who finishes with a 29-5 overall record. "Things happen. I had to adjust to what I had to do and I gave it all I got for the rest of the tournament. Everything didn’t work out the way I wanted to, but I’ll keep working toward the future.”

Junior 133-pounder Scotti Sentes placed fourth after losing his second match of the tournament to Penn State's Andrew Long. Sentes held a 5-2 lead in the second period, until Long connected on a pair of takedowns to take the lead. He added a riding-time point to win 7-5. He finishes with a 35-8 overall record.

Long knocked Sentes out of the quaterfinals on Friday, scoring a pinfall victory after Sentes looked to have control of the match.

“He just came out on top those two times," Sentes said. "I could’ve beaten him, I felt like I should’ve beaten him, but I didn’t. I’m sure he’s excited about it, but we’ll wrestle again.”

In the first session, Sentes defeated Wisconsin's Tyler Graff 5-0 to advance to the final round of the 133-pound wrestlebacks.

Sentes, who lost to Graff 7-2 earlier in the season, scored a takedown late in the first period to take an early lead. He chose to go on bottom to start the second period and recorded a point off an escape, and added another takedown in the third to advance.

Bennett places eighth

Entering the tournament a No. 6 seed at 174 pounds, Ben Bennett finished it in eighth place after losing to Maryland's Mike Letts 7-2. Letts scored a pair of takedowns in the first two periods, while all Bennett could rack up were escapes.

The two-time All-American closes his season with a 30-8 overall record, with three of those losses during the tournament.

"It's not where I wanted to finish," Bennett said. "Obviously my goal coming in here was to win and I wasn’t able to accomplish that. Now I just need to recover for a week or two and let my body recover and get back to work on those things I need to improve on."
