Dog Tales, parties offer students chance to relax during finals week

If there is a third thing certain in life beyond death and taxes, it is exam week afflicting scores of stressed students with all-nighters and potentially disastrous amounts of coffee.

Fortunately, several programs have been set up specifically let students relax with a break from the hard work, from the residence halls to the Student Activity Center.

Celani and Fabiano halls resident assistant Ashley Watters has big plans.

“In order to kick off exam week, my hall will have a Cinco De Mayo party the Sunday before exams begin,” the Detroit senior said.

In addition to the party, Watters plans to find ways to get her residents out of the building.

“They are in here all day studying, for one hour I want to be able to take them out to Subway or Jimmy John’s, just something to get them away from their books for a little and relax,” she said.

Layne Davis, assistant director of Fitness and Wellness, said she is excited for the Student Activity Center to offer free fitness classes.

“Students have been showing the need in past years for a way to relax during exam week," Davis said. "This is our first year of free classes and it is a great way to relieve anxiety in a positive and healthy way."

Calkins Hall is also cooking up some plans to provide an exam oasis for students. On Sunday it will host an academic incentives program with a pancake dinner, but not before bringing in the canine companions of Dog Tales.

Calkins resident assistant Scott Cooke said he has participated in Dog Tales before and thinks it is a great way to relieve the stress that comes with finals week.

"The dogs are always great to have because a lot of people miss their (pets at home)," the Bloomfield Hills junior said. "The dogs don’t care who you are or what troubles you are going through, they just love to be petted."
