Religion Club begins year with new name, new president

The Religion Club is beginning the new school year with a new name.

Previously called S.E.C.R.E.T (Scholars Exploring Cultures Religious Experiences and Traditions), The Religion Club  formally renamed itself.

President Devon Roberts, Livonia senior, said the acronym was simply too much to remember.

“I took up the job as president because most of the members graduated last year, and it’s hard to build up the club from just one person," Roberts said. "I want to get the word out and make next year an easier transition year."

While it is a rebuilding year, the club members have high expectations set for themselves. With a newly-formed e-board, the club will hold discussion panels focused on topics such as how sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll relate to religion.

The next meeting, scheduled for Sept. 14, will focus on music and quotes in relation to religion. Members are asked to come prepared with a song they associate with religion, and a group discussion will follow.

“We try (not) to promote nor denote any certain academic study of religion,” said Hugh Talat Halman, faculty adviser and assistant professor of philosophy and religion.

Halman said typical meetings vary on topic, whether it be a certain religion if a holiday is near, a philosophically-related book or even a movie night.

"We want to continue to explore the variety of religious experiences as it shows up in various human cultures through events and projects,” Halman said.

Meetings will be held every other week at 6:30 p.m. in Anspach 151. Dates are posted on the group's Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5044074031.
