WITH VIDEO: Low turnout from weather at Wesley at CMU's Homecoming Car Bash

Wesley at CMU hosted its first annual Homecoming Car Bash Friday despite cold weather.

The Homecoming Car Bash was held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wesley, 1400 S. Washington St., on the corner of Preston and Washington streets, however, due to the unanticipated weather conditions, the turnout was not as expected.

“We had a lot of fun, but unfortunately, it was colder than we anticipated,” said Wesley at CMU Director Charlie Farnum, “but we anticipate more people to come out for the movie later."

Employees of Wesley and students alike took turns beating the junk yard car with sledge hammers, as well as pelting eggs at it.

Some even spray painted “Beat EMU” and “Fire Up!!!” on the body of the car.

Despite having a smaller crowd and less money that came in, Farnum said he was not worried.

“Students came up with the idea when we were trying to think of how to get the word out about Wesley and that it is in fact a church,” Farnum said. “We wanted to get people fired up for Homecoming Weekend and to let people know that Wesley is a place to come and meet people and feel welcomed.”

Wesley is in the center of campus, but Farnum said he feels it is still overlooked and often, in the hustle and bustle of classes and other events, Wesley also goes unnoticed.

“We thought of this idea after visiting Wesley at Western (Michigan University),” said Geoff Sykes, a junior from St. Johns and Wesley employee. “We thought, ‘what better way to get the name of Wesley out there than by having a Car Bash?'”

With the stress and anxiety of classes, he said Wesley members planned the car bash for students to relieve some tension.

“Having the car bash was great because it was a fun activity and an awesome stress reliever,” said Detroit senior Joanna Wysocki. “I feel satisfied with the damage I caused.”

The Homecoming Car Bash was not the only event that evening.  After the Car Bash the church screened “Thor,” continuing the theme of sledge hammer bashing.
