Baseball team drops first game of doubleheader Saturday

No. 23 Stetson scored early and often in the opening game of the day-night doubleheader against the Central Michigan baseball team Saturday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.

The Hatters scored in every inning except the fifth en route to an 11-3 victory, improving to 5-0 on the season.

CMU starting pitcher Jon Weaver was relieved of his duties after just 3 2/3 innings after Stetson roughed him up on the stat sheet.

Weaver allowed eight runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks.

It began when Mark Jones scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning off the bat of Sam Kimmel.

Weaver contributed to the woes when he threw a wild pitch, scoring Kimmel.

Spencer Theisen concluded the first inning scoring outburst when he grounded out to third base, which scored Ben Carhart, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Chippewas cut a 4-0 deficit down to two in the third when Eric Wrozek tripled to centerfield, scoring Nick Reginer. Then Tom Lally reached on a fielding error, scoring Wrozek.

After CMU closed the gap, the Hatters expanded it a two-inning span, scoring a run in the third and three in the fourth.

Stetson outhit the Chippewas 10-7 in a sloppy game. CMU recorded five errors, but the Hatters weren’t much better, posting four.

The second half of the doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. Ryan Longstreth will be the starting pitcher for the Chippewas in his first start of the season.

Head coach Steve Jaksa isn’t available for comment following the first game of a doubleheader, but should be following the second game.
