Participants decked out in costumes prepare to take the plunge Saturday
More than 100 Mount Pleasant locals are ready to get into cold water for a good cause Saturday.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., Law Enforcement Torch Run will hold the Polar Plunge fundraiser near Rose Pond at Central Michigan University.
LETR works in connection with Special Olympics Michigan to collect money for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
LETR’s newsletter said there will be a costume competition and the participants will end up jumping into the pond.
People willing to participate have to donate a minimum of $75. Registration can be done online or by signing up the day of the event starting at 10:30 a.m.
SOMI’s Senior Director of Public Relations and Marketing Kimberly Purdy said in an email there are awards for best costume, but the focus is on raising as much money as possible.
“It is not really a competition; rather an incredible fundraising mechanism,” Purdy said. “It is a great example of the spirit of volunteerism.”
Purdy said $39,756 was raised last year with 230 participating in Mount Pleasant. SOMI will have 27 Polar Plunges around the state this year.
