Junior first baseman Jordan Adams had a career day as he lead the Central Michigan baseball team to a 7-2 win against Toledo with two home runs.

CMU senior designated hitter Nate Theunissen made it 2-2 on a RBI ground out after senior left fielder Sam Russell knocked in the first CMU run in with an RBI single in the third. Then junior first baseman Jordan Adams hit home run number one on the day over the left field wall to make a 4-2 lead.

Senior pitcher Zach Cooper spent the second and third inning struggling to find his control walking three Rockets (12-17, 3-4 MAC) and allowing two runs. In the third inning may have helped his confidence and control.

“It feels good (to get two home runs), anytime you put the team in the position to win especially in a MAC game it feels great,” Adams said.

Cooper was able to find his control and kept UT off the board as he went seven innings allowing just three hits and striking out four. Fellow senior Jon Weaver came on in relief in the eighth and ninth innings to finish the game.

“We got ahead and I think Coop wasn’t that sharp, but he battled and that is what you want out of your Friday guy because not every time will you be at your best,” said head coach Steve Jaksa. “(Weaver) did great, he has pitching great since we put him the bullpen and he has accepted that role.”

The much needed win brings an end to the Chippewas three-game losing streak and allows them to take sole possession of second place in the Mid-American Conference West Division behind Western Michigan.

“I want to get a two game winning streak, it’s crazy this game that I’ve already forgot about the past,” Jaksa said. “It doesn’t really matter what (WMU) does we’re going to play them at the end of the season.”

CMU and Adams weren’t done scoring on the day after the third inning.

The Chippewas added three more runs, two in the sixth off an error and senior catcher William Arnold had a RBI single and another off Adams’ second home run of the day in the seventh.

“Adams had the kind of day everybody wants,” Jaksa said. “I thought the team had a good approach to the plate.”

CMU will be looking to maintain that approach Saturday as it continues the series at 2:05 p.m.
