Keeping traditions alive while showing school spirit, the annual Homecoming field games took place at Finch Fieldhouse on Thursday. Seventeen teams competed for the Golden Goblet and the Maroon Cup.

Kicking off the field games, the Asian Culture Organization performed a flash mob dance to the newest Korean pop song, "Gangnam Style," by Psy.

Clinton Township senior and president of the ACO, Mickey Wong, planned this appearance.

“Every year we compete in the field games event, and this year we wanted to add in something new,” said Wong. “We put on a flash mob dance before we competed in the relay to get everyone hyped up for the games.”

Following the dance, the field games had officially begun. Two teams competed side by side at a time. Each team started with five participants at the first event, the balloon pop. The team members had to pass three balloons without using their hands. Once the balloon reached the last person in line, they had to pop the balloon to find the golden coin that was then passed to each player in order to move on.

Advancing through the relay, the teams reached the second event known as "Dig for Gold." There were paper plates mounted with whipped cream that contained a piece of gum inside. One player had to find the piece of gum with their mouths then blow a bubble and pop it before passing along the coin.

After this event was the three-legged race, where two members were tied at the ankles and were forced to walk in sync. Following this race came the dress bag event. Students had to dress up as a construction worker. According to Midland senior and team Larzelere competitor, Mandi Shook, this was the most challenging event.

“I would say that getting dressed was the hardest event because of all the specifications,” Shook said. “You had to have the shoes tied, flannel shirts buttoned up all the way, and the suspenders buckled.”

Once the competitors met all the dress bag requirements, they then could proceed through the relay and take on the egg race. One group member participated in this event, balancing a golden egg on a spoon. This then led to the ball leg race, members had to pick up a bouncy ball with their legs while hopping to the 7th event.

Participants had to throw a football through a basketball hoop from beyond the arch. Once this task was completed, the entire team came together for the final team cheer that was recited three times before the timer was stopped.

Placing for the Golden Goblet, Asian Culture Organization received the first place title, while Kappa Delta Phi came in second, and Student Recreation Association in third.

Rochester Hills senior and Asian Culture Organization team member, Lauren Lloyd said she felt rewarded.

“The real award was that we had fun while showing school spirit,” said Lloyd. “Receiving the first place title was just a plus.”

Also placing for the Maroon Cup was Trout as first, Some Old Towers as second, and Merrill/Sweeney as third titles.

This was Chesaning freshman and Trout participant Alli Adams’ first time involved in the field games.

“It feels fantastic to receive the first place title in tonight’s event. Our main focus was to have fun together as a group,” Adams said. “Last year, Trout won the Maroon Cup and this placement gets us closer.”
