Homecoming field games on Thursday bring out students' competitive side
Ready. Set. Go. Once the horn blows, the 17 teams will line up to participate in the annual Homecoming Field Games.
The field games relay will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Finch Fieldhouse.
The eight events will revolve around this year central theme of "All That Glitters is Chippewa Gold." Events include a balloon race/pop, dig for gold, three-legged race, dress bag, egg race, leg ball, free throw and the team cheer. Each event will have gold incorporated, and the participants will be passing along to their teammates a gold piece throughout the events.
Allen Park junior Tessa Mac was in charge of this year’s relay.
“We incorporated the gold color into basically everything. We have golden eggs, gold balloons, gold coins and gold footballs,” Mac said. “Anything we could possibly make gold, we did.”
In previous years, the field games have followed a rotation cycling through the different events, although this year there will not be a rotation rather one huge relay race.
Rockford senior and Homecoming committee co-chair Megan Ellinger said they try to keep traditional events that people love while revamping them.
"We may have recurring games, but we are adding new and exciting things to them. We have been working on the new additions for months and cannot wait for the games to begin," she said.
Each team is allowed up to 10 members, in which they determine who will compete in the events. Participants get the chance to compete for first, second and third place titles. Judges will be scoring the teams according to the fastest overall times from the relay.
For years now this event has taken place, allowing students to cheer, work and build spirit together in a relay of fun and physical games. Students compete to ultimately win the Maroon Cup or Golden Goblet.
Midland junior Josh Finch has been a devoted entry.
“I first got involved as a freshman. The field games are unbelievably fun and it gives you a chance to relive being a competitive kid,” Finch said. “Homecoming is all about getting to know each other, meet new people, and showing off your school spirit. I will be competing alongside my team, Trout Hall, for the Maroon Cup. Last year, Trout won the Maroon Cup, so we are trying to hold the title.”
While team registration is over, everyone is welcome to view the events and not only cheer, but also engage in the finale team cheers.
