Softball finishes weekend with win against SFA 6-3

Central Michigan softball finished the weekend 4-1 with another win, this time against Stephen F. Austin 6-3.

The Chippewas continued to be a force at the plate with eight hits on the day. Junior catcher Cory DeLamielleure had a productive day leading them with two RBI and two runs including one home run.

The team found itself in familiar territory, leading the game after an explosive first inning. SFA scored in the top half off a single up the middle by Shalie Day to score Cadie Weaver.

The bats responded quickly with a single by senior Macy Merchant, who then stole second. Once again, the top three batters in the lineup ended in a run after senior Summer Knoop singled to record the RBI off Merchant. Knoop would score on a passed ball after sophomore CarolAnn Sexauer struck out swinging.

SFA attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth when Day hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game 2-2. In the bottom of the inning, CMU bounced back with two runs to put it back up top.

Sexauer started the inning with a single to left field. The next at-bat DeLammielleur sent Sexauer home, smacking her first home run of the season to left field.

The Chippewas kept applying pressure in the fifth with two more runs.

Junior Britteny Horan doubled to left center to start the inning and was joined by DeLamielleur who walked, a wild throw advanced Horan and DeLamielleur into scoring position. Freshman third baseman Trista Cox doubled to the left to score them both, putting the game out of reach.

Junior Chelsea Sundberg earned the victory, pitching five innings and striking out seven batters while allowing three hits. Junior Kristen Kuhlman pitched the final two innings and was awarded the save, giving up no runs.

Central Michigan improves to 6-4 on the season. It will take Monday off before a 4 p.m. game against Penn State.
