COLUMN: We're almost there

You've survived another semester of classes. Doesn't that feel great?

Oh wait, just kidding. We still have finals week, which, for many, can actually instill ominous feelings of horror, anxiety or regret, or some awful combination of the three.

I'm writing this on under two hours of sleep and multiple cups of Sumatra coffee.

"But that's crazy!" you cry out incredulously, accidentally knocking over a stack of papers precariously thrown across your dirty desk, before realizing just how much material you actually don't know for that cumulative exam coming up in less than a week's time.

This is that home stretch of the semester, which I not so cleverly phrase as "grind time."

With final exams, group projects and the often inevitable all-nighters, we often forget the end is within sight.

Oh, speaking of all-nighters, I talked with the awesome folks over at Kaya Coffee House, and asked about their increased service, just for my personal curiosity.

They will be open for 24 hours to accommodate students with final exams, beginning Sunday night.

After next week, we will have a month off from classes.

For some, that means working to pay the bills or for extra cash to buy that overpriced video game or new tablet you "need" because your 1,287 friends on Facebook have them. For others, it simply means relaxing and spending time with family and friends from home.

I'll be spending time with family and catching up with friends, eating way too much food and one day I will be speaking to multiple classes of younger students about disabilities.

Whatever you have planned for the break, remember that cup of coffee, group presentation or that horrible beast of a calculus final means you're that much closer to a well-deserved break. Us CMU students work hard, so I think we should cherish the time we will have off.
