A major power outage occurred in the Mount Pleasant area earlier today, which impacted 3,637 Consumers Energy customers.

As of 2:15 p.m., electricity has been restored to 2,061 customers and 1,576 remain with power interference.

The outage began at 10:50 a.m., according to Consumers Energy, due to inclement weather interfering with the power lines that feed the Fordyce and Wiedman power substations. Repairs have been made to Fordyce, which provides power to primarily Mount Pleasant customers.

The Weidman substation is still under repair and is scheduled to be fixed by 8 p.m. tonight. This station provides power primarily to Wiedman, Rosebush and Farwell.

This shutdown affected the Mount Pleasant Public School's Administration Building on Kinney Ave. Beal City public schools were closed at noon due to a sustained power outage.

The outage was estimated to have begun between 10:30 a.m. and lasted approximately 45 minutes, according to Mount Pleasant Superintendent Mike Pung.

"It only affected our administration building, (other schools) had power, and it was restored by about 11:25 a.m.," Pung said.
