The religion department at Central Michigan University held a screening of the documentary “Give Me Sex, Jesus,” a film exploring many Christians' views on sex, marriage and what it means to be “pure.”

The film told the stories of religious leaders and scholars, Christian couples and LGBTQ youth in order to answer the question, “As a Christian, when is it okay to have sex?”

The documentary was shown Thursday afternoon in Anspach Hall.

Kaitlyn Anderson and Kyra Denton, both freshmen from Swartz Creek, said they were drawn in by the film’s rather controversial title.

“I’m a Christian, so I’m intrigued by what they have to say about religion and sexuality, because those two don’t usually go together,” Anderson said.

Denton shared similar thoughts about the film.

“I’m pretty excited. I was brought up a really devout Catholic, so sex has always been a taboo thing for me.”

Though the title may sound risqué, “Give Me Sex, Jesus” condemned casual sex and one night stands, and strongly encouraged young people to stay abstinent until marriage.

“I think it’s going to be a very interesting take on (religion),” said sophomore Michael Willett from Springport. Following the film, Willett said it had matched his expectations, and said “(It was) an intellectual and accurate portrayal of Christianity.”

The film covered everything from the founding of the “True Love Can Wait” movement to being gay in the Christian community.

Brandon Birkner, a junior from Goodrich, said “I didn’t think it was going to be that much into detail. I thought it was very interesting. It didn’t change my beliefs, but it broadened my horizons.”
