CMDHD to give away free condoms for National Condom Week

The Central Michigan District Health Department will be offering STD or pregnancy testing and safe sex education and free condoms to recognize National Condom Week from Feb. 10-17.

The CMDHD Mount Pleasant branch is located at 2012 E Preston St. and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to the national condom week website, the annual holiday began at the University of California-Berkley in the late 1970s. After being celebrated as a local campus event the celebration spread to universities, high schools and various health organizations all over the country.

The jovial celebration has helped spread awareness since its inception. Condoms can help reduce the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and lessen the possibility of unwanted pregnancies.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a rising number of STD victims. In 2017 there were 50,998 cases of chlamydia, 15,413 cases of gonorrhea and 1,305 cases of syphilis.

With Valentine's Day approaching, CMDHD hopes to educate the Mid-Michigan population about practicing safe sex and its benefits.
