Sophomore forward Kyra Bussell takes a two point shot on March 23 at the Joyce Center.

Despite the tough opening night loss against Green Bay, Central Michigan women’s basketball still earned attention from the Mid-American Conference this week.

Junior forward Kyra Bussell was named MAC West Division Player of the Week.

Bussell scored a career-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks. Bussell was 12 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 4 from the 3-point line.

”A lot of the credit has to go to my teammates,” Bussell said of her performance against Green Bay. “We played good team basketball, they put me in positions to score, so all the credit goes to them.”

Bussell played all 33 games for the Chippewas last season and is expected be one of the leaders on the court this season.

First-year head coach Heather Oesterle expects as much from her starting forward.

“She does that in practice," Oesterle said. "She can hit the three; she can get to the basket; she can post up."

The forward from Grand Rapids will look to carry her positive performance into the next game when the Chippewas take on No. 9 Louisville on the road.
