Student employees Briana Tarver and Samantha Shriber pass out voting ballots to senators before the Academic Senate meeting Nov. 5 in French Auditorium.

Earlier this semester, Phame Camarena decided to step down from his position as Honors Director at Central Michigan University. Camarena plans to remain a faculty member in the College of Education and Human Services.

Academic senate elected two faculty members – Donna Ericksen of mathematics and Patricia Williamson of broadcast and cinematic arts – to join the search committee for a new honors director during its Nov. 5 meeting.

Ericksen served on the Honors Council from 2008-14 and 2016-19 and chaired the council from 2011-13 and 2017-18.

Williamson has taught at CMU for 20 years. She served on the Honors Council for eight years, including two terms as vice-chair and two terms as chair of the council.

"The goal is to find someone to continue Dr. Camarena’s excellent work in student recruitment and running an outstanding honors program at CMU," said Ian Davison, interim senior vice provost for academic affairs, whose office is coordinating the search.

The search committee will make recommendations regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate to Executive Vice President and Provost Mary Schutten. Schutten will have the final say on who is hired.

Davison said the hiring process should be completed by mid-February. Once finalists are selected, each one will speak at a forum on campus.
