Students were seen spending their third Wellness Day hammocking, having picnics and going on walks with their friends on campus March 10.

The spring-like temperatures allowed students to head outside in groups -- something that has been rare for campus community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Northville senior Grace Horalek packed a picnic and walked to the courtyard between Anspach Hall and Pearce Hall.

“The weather was really nice and I’ve been cooped up inside all winter,” Horalek said. “I just wanted to sit outside I was basically like, I’ll just do what I’m doing inside, but outside.”

Horalek brought her Nintendo Switch out with her to play Animal Crossing. She said she enjoyed having the time off to relax and forget about her schoolwork.

“I really enjoyed not having any classes today, I will say, though I wish we could have the full spring break,” Horalek said. "I have kind of an unspoken rule with myself that on wellness days I refuse to do any homework unless I absolutely have to. I’m just really trying to take advantage of what time off I can get and basically ignore school.”

Many students that were still busy, despite having the day off, chose to get out of their dorms and do homework outside.

Grand Rapids freshman John Kulich was working on an assignment outside of the Bovee University Center. Juniors Anne Findlay and Madeline Oles were doing homework together in the courtyard between Moore Hall and the Music Building.

“It’s beautiful,” Oles said. “The best Wellness Day ever.”

Other students still had work to get done but spent most of the day relaxing and having fun outside.

Sophomores Emily Martin and Valerie Schafer went for a walk and then sat in the Isabella Bank Pavilion to chat. Martin said she had a midterm exam the next day that she still needed to study for later.

Ashley Adams and Makayla King, both Pontiac sophomores, turned in their biology lab earlier in the day before heading on a walk and visiting the greenhouse.

CMU Campus Police Officer Trent Case was patrolling the campus to talk to people and take advantage of the good weather.

“With the way the weather is, I thought, what a better time to go out, see people, talk to a few here and there,” Case said. "It’s a perfect day to be out, mixing with the other folks that are walking around.”

There will be four more Wellness Days on March 23, April 2, 7 and 30.
