A carnival will honor a Mt. Pleasant girl who died earlier this month on what would have been her 14th birthday.

Adrie Dembowske's friends and family will gather at 5 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the Eight 2 Eight Rental Hall to honor her memory.

Dembowske was born June 28, 2007, and would have celebrated her 14th birthday Monday.

Dembowske was described as “fun-loving” by Staci Funnell Bailey, who is organizing the event as well as a fundraiser for the family.

“She just loves to have fun,” Bailey said. “Festivals, she loves hanging out with her little sisters. I thought what a fitting idea to have for Adrie, she would have enjoyed it, and what a great day to do it on her 14th birthday, to be able to celebrate with her.”

A $10 entry fee will be charged and the proceeds will benefit Dembowske’s family.

The event will include carnival food, a face painter, caricatures, ringtoss and other games. Bailey is looking to hire a magician or puppeteer as well.

Dembowske died Sunday, June 6, after suffering stab wounds. Isaiah “Zeke” Gardenhire, 40, has been charged in her death; he was arrested in Flint two days later following an alleged two-day crime spree that police say involved robbery, carjacking, hostage taking and the sexual assault of a second woman. He was arraigned on 12 charges — seven of which carry life sentences if he is convicted, according to The Morning Sun.

He is being held on a $3 million bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. June 24.
